Kids Homemade Valentine’s Day Decorations

iphone09 053Kids are absolutely FULL of ideas when it comes to decorating for a holiday like Valentines Day! Here are some ideas for making homemade Valentine’s Day decorations for your home…

First things first… start simple. Stick to decorating just the main rooms of your home. You can give each child a ball of red, white or pink ribbon and just see what they decide to do with it. Ribbon is great to wrap around vases of flowers or draped over doorways. And, don’t forget to get a pair of scissors to run through the ribbon to create curls!

Last year I cut out a bunch of hearts out of construction paper and had them all over our craft table for the kids to do whatever they wanted with (within reason!). They made all sorts of fun Valentines… and some ended up on the top of the piano, on the window, the walls… fun! Let your kids stick them all over – whevever they can find a good spot. If you sit long enough, there may be a few attached to you! Bigger hearts can be taped onto walls and windows (make sure the tape won’t strip the paint!)… Or, you can punch a hole in the heart and put a string through to tie them onto things.

Instead of spending money on streamers for Valentine’s Day… try a paper chain in alternating colors. Cut several one inche strips in red, pink and white. Interlock the paper to create a link chain. When the chain is long enough it can be hung over a window or even over the top of the refreigerator! If you plan this early enough, you can use the chain to count down the days to the fun day.

Another fun idea is to let the kids glue popsicle sticks together to make coasters for the coffee table. Watercolor paints can be used to decorate the finished coaster. These same popsicle sticks can be used to make a poster that says I love you. Paint the sticks and then mount them on poaster board to make the letters.

Don’t forget about your sofa (or fun chair)! You can create a cloth cover for Valentines Day by measuring the length of your couch… then, place a large piece of cloth on the floor. Have felt hearts and arrows ready for the kids to glue on the cloth. You could also have felt letters/words for them to put on it too. After it dries – lay it over the back of the couch for all to see and enjoy!

It is fun to decorate the home for a holiday like Valentines Day… and I think even more fun when the kids are involved. Kids love to make more than just a picture that gets put on the fridge for a few weeks… They are usually overjoyed to see their work be displayed in more creative ways.

What are your favorite ways to decorate for Valentines’ Day?
