Kids In The Kitchen… THEIR Kitchen

by Jenni on September 1, 2007

Although I’m all for getting my kids involved in the kitchen – whether it is cooking, washing dishes, emptying the dishwasher, etc… – But, sometimes, I need my own space to be productive. I have to believe that I’m not the only mom (or dad) who has this need – so, I thought I would share my little solution that has saved my sanity time and time again!

We have a Little Tikes kitchen in the dining area… it is right off my kitchen and when I need a break, I get the kids involved in working in their own kitchen while I’m working in mine. If I’m doing dishes – I encourage them to wash their own dishes. If I’m cooking – I’ll encourage them to cook too. And my favorite – if I’m doing an overall cleaning of my kitchen, I get them cleaning their kitchen (floor and all) too! The key is to be prepared… here are a few things to stock their little kitchen with to help them feel like it is just like mommy’s.

  • Sponges for cleaning
  • Spray bottles (set to a light mist and let them spray their stove and sink to clean it)
  • Rug for in front of the sink
  • Rubber gloves
  • Pots/Pans and play food

What tips do you have for keeping sane in the kitchen?
