Don’t get caught thinking that Valentine’s crafts are just about cutting hearts out. Kids of all ages can get involved in the celebration. Toddlers are too young to use scissors safely on their own, but they can still participate in craft making with the family.
Here are some ideas for Valentine’s Day crafts that don’t require using scissors.
PAINT: Toddlers love to paint (all ages actually!). If they are in preschool, they have likely learned that it is safe and fun to paint. Give them some finger paints in red and white and let them create just about anything!
With finger paints, you have to have an area prepared to contain the mess. Dress the kids in play clothes so that they can get messy without ruining their good clothes.
Show them how to use their little hands to make a heart shape out of their prints. You can have them alternate between red and white… or they can mix the white and red to make a nice pink for more hearts. I think it is absolutely adorable to have them paint on poster board… Guide their hands to write ‘I Love You’ and you will have a beautiful masterpiece to hang on the wall for the holiday!
Toddlers can give the gift of flowers out of tissue paper as well. Give them a variety of colors and sizes of tissue paper so they can make different kinds of flowers for their loved ones.
Here is how to make the flowers…
First of all, rip and crumple up the paper. Kids love to be able to do thisi for fun.
Once the paper is sufficiently crumpled, put the sheets together in a small pile. Show the kids how to wrap a pipe cleaner around the pile of tissue sheets… then fluff them up. Keep working on it until it resembles a flower. Sometimes pipe cleaners are hard to manage for little ones. You might need to add the pipe cleaner yourself and then just let your child do the fluffing.
FOAM SHAPES: Craft stores have all sorts of great things toddlers can use for Valentine’s Day crafting. You can buy foam shapes that are pre-made… usually it is easy to find some that are related to the upcoming holiday. Kids just have to punch them out and stick them onto whatever surface you provide. No glue… no mess.
Here is an idea for foam shapes…
Take a picture of your child and print it up on the printer. Cut out their face and place it in the center of a foam sheet. Let your child decorate the rest of the sheet with other foam shapes… a perfect gift for grandparents or other family members as a Valentine’s Day card that is unique and special.
It just takes a little bit of creativity to come up with craft ideas for your Toddler that doesn’t require scissorts. Each of the above Valentine Crafts for toddlers require no scissors and they still make excellent crafts that are fun and still leave room for creativity.
